Telephone service restored between Orcas, San Juan islands
Islanders on Orcas and San Juan are able to talk to each other by telephone after CenturyLink restored phone service between the two islands at about 4 p.m., Thursday.
Telephone service linking the San Juans two most populated islands had been down since an underwater fiber optic cable failed early Tuesday morning, which disrupted electronic communication to and from most of the islands in the San Juans as well.
Telephone and 911 service was restored between Lopez and San Juan Island, home to San Juan County's Sheriff's office on Wednesday, shortly before midnight, according to CenturyLink spokeswoman Jan Kampbell.
CenturyLink's failed underwater fiber cable disrupted or shutdown most telephone, internet and a wide spectrum of wireless communication service since early Tuesday morning. Islanders have used various wireless "hotspots", such as San Juan Island Library, to connect to the internet, conduct business or access email accounts since the breakdown of communication.
CenturyLink and Orcas Power & Light Cooperative are working together to provide a temporary solutions to restoring communications in the islands because of the failed fiber optic cable.
