Interested in serving on the Friday Harbor Town Council? Today is the deadline for applications for a vacancy, the term ending Dec. 31, 2009.

Two Friday Harbor residents have applied for appointment by the mayor and council: Bob Low and Noel Monin.

Low, a former town fire chief, is county fire marshal and an elected member of the San Juan Hospital District Commission. Monin is a San Juan Island Fire Department lieutenant. He is one of five full-time employees at the department and is in charge of the maintenance division.

The council position was vacated by Kelley Balcomb-Bartok, who resigned effective June 6 to take a communications position at the City of Renton.

Council members are paid $85 per meeting for up to four meetings per month.

The Town Council is a legislative body. Council members adopt resolutions and ordinances, approve changes in zoning, make policy and approve the budget.

The Town Council is expected to interview applicants by July 17 and appoint someone to the vacancy Aug. 7.
