Bethrey von Dassow has joined San Juan Island Library as adult programming coordinator.
A former academic advisor at the University of South Floride, Sarasota-Manatee, von Dassow was selected from a group of local and regional applicants seeking the position. Her resume includes positions at the Selby Library in Sarasota, Fla., Memphis Public Library and experience in media-center related capacities in high schools and elementary schools in Sarasota.
“I love working in a library setting, but I am especially excited to be working in such a vibrant, active library that is supported by the community," von Dassow said. "It is exactly the work I trained for and dreamed of doing.”
A former Pacific Northwest resident, Von Dassow earned a master of arts in library and information science at the University of South Florida, Tampa, and is delighted about her return the Northwest.
"We are returning to the Northwest after years away," she said. "My husband has been living here for a year, and I am excited to be here with him now."
In her job at the library, von Dassow will be in charge of adult program scheduling and assist at the information desk as well.
"(Bethery) has a long-time love for the community from visiting family on the island for many years," said library Director Laurie Orton, hired to lead the public library in . "She also has a strong interest in helping people, and an eagerness to work together with local presenters and organizations.”
Library hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The library has computers available for public use and information about consumer, financial and academic affairs, and language learning skills, as well as test preparation, are available on the library website.
Library cards are free to island residents with proof of residency.
