FHES principal search; and then there were three

March 21, 2013 · Updated 6:36 PM

Two school administrators, one from Washington and the other Montana, and a Montana university official have made the final cut in the search for a new principal of Friday Harbor Elementary School.

The three finalists, announced last week by San Juan Island School District Superintendent Rick Thompsen, are scheduled to meet with school officials, faculty, parents and the community in a series of meetings that begin Monday, March 25.

School District officials are seeking a replacement for principal Connie Martin, who is stepping down at the end of the school year following a two-year tenure at the elementary school. Martin, who took over the job as the school's chief administrator at the start of the 2011-12 school year, succeeded former principal Gary Pflueger.

Slected from a group of nine semi-finalists by the district's search committee, the three finalists are each slated to spend a full day in Friday Harbor talking with the search committee, completing a written exercise and meeting with school parents and staff, followed by introductions to the community at the elementary school library.

Jerry Bauer, currently at the Montana State University Education Department, has been an elementary school principal in Montana and Wisconsin. He will be interviewed on Monday, March 25, and will meet the community at 6 p.m., at the elementary school.

Diane Ball, an assistant principal in the Marysville School District, was an elementary school teacher in Conway, Wash., for nearly 20 years. She will be in Friday Harbor Thursday, March 28, and will talk with parents and interested community members at 6 p.m.

Matthew Holshouser is also an assistant principal, in Livinston, Mont., and has been an elementary school teacher in Montana. He will be in Friday Harbor Friday, March 29, and will also meet the community at 6 p.m.

Detailed information on each candidate is available from the superintendent's office.
