Haida artist April White to sign new book June 6 at Friday Harbor Whale Museum
June 6, 2008 · Updated 10:18 AM
Noted Haida artist April White will sign copies of her new book, “Sgaana Jaad: Killer Whale Woman,” Friday at 7 p.m. in The Whale Museum.
The event is open to the public.
The book, published by Maradadi Pacific Publishing, features 25 years of White’s art along with accompanying legends and stories. The hardcover book features more than 40 of her paintings and hand-pulled serigraphs.
Until now, White’s work has only been accessible to the public through gallery showings, museum exhibits and art stores. This book will enable a wider audience to view and appreciate the work of this talented artist.
White said The Whale Museum is a fitting venue for her book unveiling — “Sgaana Jaad,” Haida for “Killer Whale Woman,” is her Haida name.
A self-taught artist, White has been painting since the early 1980s. She was born on Haida Gwaii off the coast of Northern British Columbia. She is descended from a line of powerful Haida chieftains.
