Deadlines draw near in Conservation District supervisor election

One position on the San Juan Islands Conservation District board of supervisors will be up for election on Feb. 26.

The position on the district governing board is a three-year term and any county registered voter who owns land or operates a farm in San Juan County is eligible to be a candidate. Deadline for filing a nominating petition with the district, a prerequisite for candidates, is Jan. 29. The board of supervisors is responsible for governance and oversight of the Conversation District, formulating policies, approving budgets and monitoring use of district resources. It is a volunteer position. The board meets monthly and supervisors typically serve on district committees and provide technical support as appropriate.

The conservation district election will be conducted by mail or at the district's polling station, 540 Guard Street, No. 150, in Friday Harbor, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Feb. 26.

Ballots must be requested by Feb. 19 for those wishing to vote by mail. Requests can be made by contacting the district Election Officer: by mail, SJICD, 350 Court St., No. 10, Friday Harbor, WA, 98250, by telephone, (360) 378-6621, by fax, (360) 378-2445, online, www.sanjuanislandscd.org, by email, c.mass@sanjuanislandscd.org, or in person, 540 Guard St., No. 150, Friday Harbor.

Ballots will be mailed when a candidates list is final, and must be returned postmarked no later then Feb. 26. District election procedures are available at the district office, 540 Guard St., or at the Washington State Conservation Commission website, www.scc.wa.gov.
