Journal wins four awards in annual community newspapers contest
The Journal of the San Juan Island won four awards in the 2012 Better Newspapers Contest hosted by the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association.
The awards were presented at the association's annual convention, held this year in Yakima, Sept. 28-30. The Journal was judged for work produced between April 1, 2011, and March 31, 2012. Seventy-three newspapers competed; judging was by the New York Press Association.
The Journal won the following awards.
First Place: Best General Feature Story - Short, "San Juan Historical Society celebrates 50th Anniversary," Cali Bagby. Judges comment, "Vividly written, closely observed, but the reporter is absent, allowing the sources to speak for themselves. Well done all around."
First Place: Best Online Photo Gallery, Slide Show or Video, "12th Annual Orca Sing," Cali Bagby. Judges comment, "A great blend of stills and video makes for a compelling narrate, as well as a bevy of interviews."
Third Place: Best Government Reporting, "Charter on course?," Scott Rasmussen. Judges comment,"Wonderful lede, drawing the reader in immediately, and a good explanation and analysis of the issues."
Third Place: Special Sections, "Weddings in the San Juan Islands 2012," Roxanne Angel, Rebecca Cook, Scott Herning, Scott Rasmussen.
