Friday Harbor man dead of self-inflicted gunshot wound

A Friday Harbor man died at his home Saturday morning of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to local authorities.

The body of Michael Shaun, 72, was found in a rear bedroom of his Harrison Street home shortly after the San Juan County Sheriff's Department received a telephone call from the home regarding a suicide. The caller, a male, notified the department of a suicide at Shaun's home at about 10 a.m. and then hung up, according to the Sheriff's department.

Deputies reportedly found a note beside Shaun's body.

Authorities believe that Shaun barricaded himself inside his home before firing the fatal shot. The windows and doors of the home were blocked and fortified from within when deputies, firefighters and paramedics converged outside the man's home, located 600 block of Harrison Street. With tools supplied by San Juan Island Fire Department, officers were able to get inside the home and then discovered Shaun, dead at the scene, in a rear bedroom.

An autopsy of the body will be performed and the case remains under investigation, according to the Sheriff's department.
