Friday Harbor's 'Orca Bowl' squad nets 13th at nationals
May 1, 2012 · Updated 11:52 AM
The Friday Harbor High School Marine Science team proved the old adage to be true...third time is a charm.
In its third consecutive trip to nationals the team, more commonly known as the “Orca Bowl” squad, placed 13th out of a field of 24 regional champions competing for the nation’s top honor, April 19-21 in Baltimore.
Friday Harbor bested three teams before being ousted by a Santa Monica-area rival. Michigan’s Marshfield High School won the national title for the fourth consecutive year.
This year's ocean trivia team earned the right to compete at nationals after claiming its third straight regional championship. The team advanced further at the national competition than it had in its prior two appearances.
“I felt like we had the best teamwork we had in awhile,” team captain Audrey Olshefsky said. “Everyone contributed.”
