January 31, 2012 · Updated 5:01 PM
The body of Dorothy Shayler, 38, was found on Waldron Island on Jan. 28. Officials believe Shayler committed suicide, but are awaiting autopsy results. Shayler had been missing since Oct.17.
Numerous searches of the island had been made by the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office using search dogs from Whatcom and Pierce County search and rescue units, ground searches by Skagit County SAR groups, firefighters from Orcas and San Juan Island, air and sea support from the U.S. Coast Guard and massive support from the Waldron community.
Shayler's body was eventually found by people living part-time on Waldron. Authorities believe she took her own life on the night she disappeared, after entering the unoccupied of a neighbor.
