Cause of Christmas Eve rollover crash still under investigation

Two San Jaun islanders were flown off-island with non-life threatening injuries following a rollover collision on Beaverton Valley Road in the early morning hours of Christmas Eve.

A 31-year-old man and 23-year-old woman were westbound on Beaverton Valley Road when the driver of the 1999 Chevy Malibu the two were traveling in lost control of the vehicle and crashed near the intersection of No. 2 Schoolhouse Road, at about 1:30 a.m., according to the San Juan County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff Rob Nou said both occupants were outside the vehicle — they were being treated by paramedics at the time — when officers arrived at the scene. He said that the cause of the crash remains under investigation and officers had yet to determine which one of the occupants were behind the wheel at the time of the collision.

The speed limit along that stretch of Beaverton Valley Road is 45 mph.

Nou described the man and the woman as "local folks", but declined to identify either, as the crash remains under investigation. He said that alcohol "probably" was a factor in causing the crash.

One of the two occupants was released from a hospital earlier in the week and the other is expected to be released in the next couple of days, Nou said.
