San Juan County Sheriff's Department reported responding to these calls:
Sept. 7: The whereabouts of a semi-automatic handgun remain unknown after it was left behind in a nightstand of a Orcas Island suite by a southwest Washington couple. The owner of the missing handgun, a 59-year-old Brush Prairie man, discovered it missing about a week after the couple returned home. Their suite reportedly had been occupied several times before management was notified about the location of the gun.
Sept. 11: A Lopez Island woman was arrested for driving with a suspended license following an early evening traffic stop near the intersection of Center and Dill roads. The 25-year-old, pulled over at about 8:30 p.m., reportedly was driving in the dark and without her taillights on.
Sept. 13: A classic "California stop" prompted the arrest of an Orcas Island man for driving with a suspended license following a late night traffic stop in Eastsound. The 36-year-old, who was pulled over near the intersection of Mount Baker Road and Schoen Lane at about 11:30 p.m., reportedly failed to come to a complete stop before proceeding through the intersection.
Sept. 19: A Montana man who feared his wife may be in trouble, and then notified authorities of his concern, was later arrested for an alleged probation violation and for possession of methamphetamine during a late night encounter with deputies in Friday Harbor. The 28-year-old, a customer of a Friday Harbor inn, was taken into custody at about 1 a.m. after officers learned of the warrant for his arrest and then allegedly found methamphetamine among his belongings. The man’s wife and young child were reportedly safe and asleep in a nearby home at the time.
— A Midwest man who works summers on Orcas Island was arrested for driving with a suspended license following an early evening traffic stop in Eastsound. The 24-year-old, whose license, issued in his home state of Wisconsin, was reportedly suspended for failing to pay a traffic ticket. He was pulled over for talking on a cell phone while driving at about 6 p.m.., and ticketed for the traffic violation as well.
Sept. 23: An Orcas Island man accused of violating court orders was arrested for an alleged breach of release conditions on a pending DUI offense. The 23-year-old was taken into custody without incident in Eastsound at about 9:30 a.m.
Sept. 27: A pair of warrants and an alleged probation violation prompted the arrest of an Orcas Island man, following a tip about unlawful activity at a Quarry Road home. The 19-year-old, who, along with a friend, reportedly was smoking pot inside the home when deputies arrived, was taken into custody shortly after 5 p.m. Reportedly wanted by state Corrections for failing to appear in court for violating court orders on a prior felony conviction, the man, and his friend, were cleared of a possible misdemeanor drug offense, as both have prescriptions for use of medical marijuana.
— A fender bender prompted the arrest of a San Juan Island man wanted on a charge of DUI in neighboring Island County. The 28-year-old was taken into custody at about 9 p.m., following investigation of a minor traffic accident in the 200 block of Warbass Way.
Sept. 29: A Lopez Island man was ticketed for creating a public nuisance following an unescorted foray by his dog onto a neighbor's propert. It's reportedly the second time that the 36-year-old Lab mix has been caught roaming the Hummel Lake neighborhood on its own.
Sept. 28: Two warrants led to the arrest of a San Juan Island man wanted in connection with an assault, in which a man on vacation from British Columbia was knocked unconscious three weeks earlier by a blow to the back in a Friday Harbor bar. The 22-year-old was taken into custody in the 90 block of Second Street at about 10 a.m. The alleged assailant reportedly dashed into the bar and, in a case of mistaken identity, struck the unsuspecting 60-year-old in the back of the head.
Oct. 2: A Lopez Island man was arrested for misdemeanor assault for allegedly opening fire on a 68-year-old woman and her son, and their dogs — with a BB gun — as they walked by his home on Starbird Road. The 47-year-old was taken into custody shortly after 5 p.m.
— A Seattle man faces charges of DUI and reckless driving following an apparent dangerous joy ride in downtown Friday Harbor. The 58-year-old was reportedly blowing his horn, veering over the center line and forcing vehicles in the oncoming lane to swerve out of his way as he sped west along Spring Street. He was taken into custody near the Argyle Avenue and Spring Street intersection at about 9 p.m.
