Final day to file for elected office is Friday

Candidate filing week for the fall primary and general elections began Monday, and will end this Friday.

Those seeking to run for any elected position throughout the county can submit the necessary paperwork by fax, email or in person at the county Elections office, 55 Second St., in Friday Harbor. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Candidates can also file online and receive confirmation of their filing by email. Those who file online will also receive updates when others file for the same office. Fees, if required, can be paid online with a credit card. Candidates may file from home or by using an Elections Office computer. Online filing closes at 4 p.m. on Friday.

In addition to elected positions on various boards and commissions, voters will select representatives for the Charter Review Commission, which will conduct the first review of the county’s Home Rule charter.

Adopted by voters in Nov. 2005, the Home Rule charter transformed the structure of county government, such as replacing the former three-person county commission with a six-person county council and establishing a citizen-led initiative and referendum process, beginning in 2006.

A total of 18 charter review commissioners will be elected: two from District 3 (Friday Harbor), four from District 4 (Orcas West), and 3 from each of the other legislative districts.

Voters will select commissioners only from their respective voting district. Regardless of how many candidates run from each district, all will appear on the Nov. 8 general election ballot, and the top vote-getters of each district will be elected.

For positions other than charter review commissioner, if more than two candidates file, all candidates will appear on the Aug. 16 primary ballot, and the top two vote-getters will progress to the general election.

The San Juan Island Library District Board of Trustees is asking voters to support an increase in property taxes to support normal operations and maintenance of the library.

For the two positions with filing fees must be received by 4:30 p.m., June 10.
