The top three candidates will be vying for an "interim" position this time around.
San Juan Island School District's 13-person search committee last week selected three candidates for extended interviews with school staff and community members beginning today, May 31, after interviewing six applicants seeking an "interim" position as principal of Friday Harbor Elementary School.
Islanders will be able to meet and talk with the three finalists tonight at the elementary school, beginning at 6 p.m.
Finalists for the position are:
Christy Collins, who's resumes includes experience as a teacher, elementary school principal and special education coordinator in the Lake Washington School District.
Connie Martin of Auburn, Wash., an assistant middle school principal in Auburn, and a former elementary teacher and instructional facilitator in the Auburn area as well. Martin has also been employed by the Clover Park School District in Tacoma.
Marc Vermeier of San Juan Island, who is currently a teacher at both Friday Harbor Middle School and Friday Harbor High School. In addition to his role as a classroom teacher, Vermeier has been both an athletic director and assistant principal during his tenure with the San Juan Island School District. He worked for the Lopez Island School District as an administrator last year before returning to San Juan schools earlier this year.
School officials are seeking to replace principal Gary Pfleuger, who handed in his resignation in early January after a two-and-a-half-year tenure. Pfleuger is slated to leave the post at the end of the school year.
The community will have 30 minutes to talk with each candidate of the three candidates, and district officials will the gather and compile input from members of the community and from school staff. The search committee will reconvene Wednesday to review feedback and to consider whether to recommend one of the finalists as its choice for the interim position.
