Recent pledges of $10,000 each by Roche Harbor Resort, and Rich and Joan Komen helped the campaign go over the halfway mark toward matching the challenge gift.

Superintendent Michael Soltman said in a press release, “With matching funds, $350,000 has been raised to restore program cuts related to a $600,000 budget shortfall. We are now able to restore classroom teaching positions, the Primary Intervention Program, part of the athletic program, and some essential secretarial, custodial and student support services.

There's room for more teams in Relay for Life

The goal is 35 teams. The event is July 25, 5:30 p.m., to July 26 at 11 a.m. on the Friday Harbor High School football field.

The next Team Captains meeting is June 10, 6 p.m. in the Islanders Bank bank building. "It's bank night — a good chance to turn in money. It's also the second to last captains' meeting," said Deanna Osborn, coordinator of Relay for Life San Juan.

Councilman Balcomb-Bartok resigns, accepts job in Renton
May 31 2008, 6:57 PM Friday Harbor Town Councilman Kelley Balcomb-Bartok announced Friday he is resigning effective June 6 to move to Renton, where he will work as communication specialist in the Renton mayor's office.

Balcomb-Bartok begins his new job June 16. It was not immediately known whether the Town Council will appoint someone to the vacancy or will place it on the August or November ballot.

"Kelley was chosen over 78 other applicants for the communication position," said Preeti Shridhar, communications director for the City of Renton. "It was one of the largest pool of applicants the city has ever had. Kelley will be a wonderful asset to our communications team."
