Directors oversee cooperative electrical utility serving more than 10,000 people on 20 islandsDave Hylton was reelected to the OPALCO board of directors May 17. George Mulligan was elected to the position vacated by Nourdine Jensen, who retired from the board.
A record-breaking 435 people attended the 71st annual meeting of Orcas Power & Light Cooperative on the state ferry. Hylton and Mulligan were elected directors for District I (San Juan, Brown, Henry, Pearl and Spieden islands). Terms are for three years.
40th District Democrats will vote on Senate endorsement June 7-8Sep 16 2008, 9:05 PM 40th District Democrats will vote June 7-8 to endorse a candidate in the race for the state Senate seat of Harriet Spanel, who is retiring.
Candidates are San Juan County Councilman Kevin Ranker, as well as Hue Beattie, Ken Henderson, Stephanie Kountouros and Paul Gonzales. They will attend meetings on each island June 7 and 8 for Democrats to meet them and then vote for their choice.
Ranker emerged the top choice of Democratic Party precinct committee officers in a vote May 18 in Anacortes. Ranker received 260 votes; the next-closest candidates had 94 and 78 votes, respectively.
EMS enhances Island Air ambulance equipmentMay 26 2008, 1:08 PM San Juan Island EMTs will now be able to more effectively monitor the vital signs of patients who are being flown to the mainland.
The EMTs will use the recently acquired Propaq LT monitor and sensor-based stethoscope on all Island Air Ambulance flights. This specially designed and improved equipment provides accurate measurements, even when there is noise and vibration in the aircraft.
Islands’ firefighters join in fire training

The San Juan Island Fire Department was joined by firefighters from Friday Harbor in two recent live fire training exercises.
Mock trials this week, open to the public May 27 2008, 1:17 PM May is National Law Month. To celebrate it, local high school government classes are holding mock trials through Thursday, 6-9 p.m., in the Superior Court courtroom on the second floor of the courthouse.
The mock trials, which began Tuesday, are open to the public.
