Wilson Derby, Week 9: 20-plus pounder catapults Payne into second place
Friday Harbor's Chuck Payne catapulted in second place and shook up the standings with only one week left to go in the 10th annual Frank Wilson Memorial Fishing Derby.
Payne netted the derby's weekly prize, a $75 gift certificate from Kings Marine, by landing a 20.87 pound keeper. But his 20-plus pounder didn't tip the scales quite far enough to bump Brenda Schmidt from her 6-week roost atop the leader board, leaving the Week 3 winner just seven days away from becoming the first angler of the "gentler gender" to finish in first place.
"I wouldn't mind claiming that one," Schmidt said of the prospect of being the first woman to don the derby crown. In Week 3 of the 10-week-long annual fishing competition, Schmidt reeled in a 21.33-pounder to jump into the lead. Payne's catch was about a half-a-pound shy of Schmidt's derby leader.
Sponsored by King's Marine, the 10-week long annual fishing derby is named for the late Frank Wilson, former chief of San Juan Emergency Medical Services, and derby proceeds benefit EMS.
Payne wasn't the only angler to climb up the leader board in the derby's next-to-last-week. Don Wilson hooked a 16.32-pounder to takeover third-place, Carol Holman netted a 16.11 pound prize to move into fourth and Bob Wilson landed in fifth place with a 15.79 catch.
In addition to weekly prizes for biggest fish of the week, the derby features a $1,000 grand prize for the biggest fish hooked, landed and weighed in over the course of the 10-week long tournament. Second place carries a $500 award, $250 for third, and for the biggest fish in the Women's Division, as well as for the coveted "Mystery Fish."

1) Brenda Schmidt – 21.33
2) Chuck Payne – 20.87
3) Don Wilson – 16.32
4) Carol Holman – 16.11
5) Bob Wilson – 15.79
