Firewise awards earned by four SJ neighborhoods

Four San Juan neighborhoods received awards for participation in the Firewise program.

The four are Alaska Place, Cattle Point, Mitchell Point and Roche Harbor. Representatives of those four neighborhoods received the awards Tuesday, Dec. 10, as part of a recognition ceremony at the San Juan County Council chambers.

Since its inception a decade ago, the Firewise program, sponsored San Juan Island Fire Department, and spearheaded by Ron Garner of San Juan Island Fire & Rescue, has expanded to include 38 communities on San Juan Island. Participating neighborhoods include five on non-ferry served islands, two on Orcas Island, and a pending application by a Lopez Island neighborhood.

For more information, contact Brent Johnson, Firewise coordinator, 378-5334.
