'Transitions' topic of the day at next League of Women Voters meeting'

The global movement known as "Transitions" will be topic of the day at the League of Women Voters of the San Juans meeting of Sept. 16.

Guest speaker is Felicity Green, a member of the international "Transitions" organization and Lopez Island resident. Green will talk about the history of the Transitions movement and its member groups on Lopez.

The League meeting will at San Juan Island Library, 1010 Guard Street, noon to 2 p.m.

Founded by Rob Hopkins in Totnes, England, the Transition Town movement has since spread worldwide and the UK-based Transition Network works closely with a sister group in the U.S., Transition US.

“The Transition concept is one of the big ideas of our time,” says Patrick Holden, director of the Soil Association. “Peak oil and climate change can so often leave one feeling depressed and disempowered. What I love about the Transition approach is that it is inspirational, harnessing hope instead of guilt, and optimism instead of fear.”
