In the Deep: Making the most of Marine Area 7
Marine Area 7 report, by Kevin Klein
The Pacific Northwest boating and fishing community lost a good one.
Ron Meng, founder of Islands Marine Center on Lopez Island, and builder of Ocean Sport boats passed away last week. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family, and all at IMC. Ron was 59. Rest in peace, fish forever in Valhalla, and may all your chinook be Tyee.
In light of Ron's passing, maybe it's a fitting tribute that Labor Day Weekend was on fire for big Kings.
This Labor Day holiday can mark the pinnacle of chinook fishing in the San Juans, as we then slide into fall coho. Remember the 60-pound mule that was caught here in 2010?
There will still be tanker Kings to be had through September, but the seasons turn as the world spins on it's axis. One run moves through to the rivers as another one builds. Waiting for that sniff of natal waters with senses we can't imagine.
This has been a good summer for salmon fishing, and it's flying by all too quick.
