October 4, 2011 · 4:50 PM
Friday Harbor's Rich and Brock Warin out-angled more than 200 fellow fisherman to take first and second place in this year's Eniar Neilsen/Becky Barr Fishing Classic, hosted by Roche Harbor Resort, Sept. 29 through Oct. 2.
Rich Warin landed a 20.9-pound salmon to finish first and net the 27th annual fishing derby's grand prize, a $5,000 check. His son, Brock, hooked a 16.4-pounder to edge out Eric Haviland of Bellingham, who finished third, and Jay Field of Anacortes, fourth place, and claimed the runner up position's $3,000 prize. The Warin donated $500 of prize money back to the Classic and its scholarship fund.
A total of 143 salmon tipped the Classic's scales over the course of the annual three-day fishing competition.
Haviland took home $1,000 in prize money thanks to a third-place finish and a 14.8-pound fish. Field, who netted a 13.12 pounder, earned a propane-powered lawn mower, courtesy of San Juan Propane, for finishing fourth.
Chase Wilson of Friday Harbor landed a 7.15 pound salmon to finish first in the Classic's Kids Division.
