Charles Settles, Friday Harbor resident since 1937, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 31, 2010. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Florence, just one year and two months ago; his son Charles in 1999; mother, Helga and father, Arvel.

Survived by daughter Donna Collins (Tim), son Jim, daughter Christy Johnson. Grandsons, Mike and Bart Meyer, Chad Settles, and granddaughters Krista Settles and Linnea Johnson, and three great-grandchildren.

Chuck entered the Navy at 17 and served as an oiler on the USS Brooklyn during WWII. He met Flo in New York after the war ended. He worked building houses with Sam Hemphill and then for Wilson's Shipyard. He retired as an operating engineer from San Juan Gravel Company.

A private family service will be held Saturday, Jan. 8. Memorials can be made in his name to the Salvation Army.
