Youth play covers date rape and social media at SJCT

Submitted by the San Juan Community Theatre

Teen sex, lies, gossip and social media are just some of the modern themes of San Juan Community Theatre’s next edition of its On Book! Readers Theatre series.

High School student members of the Friday Harbor Thespian Society will present Arlene Hutton’s “Kissed the Girls and Made Them Cry” in the Gubelman Theatre at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 29 through Thursday, March 30.

The drama centers on a student council president who throws a house party and photos are posted online. A group of friends gets caught up in a series of shifting events that forces them to question what really happened. Flowing and atmospheric, the play creates a powerful collage that examines the teenage experience of sexuality, objectification, shaming and date rape.

Following each performance, a “talk back” will be held with the cast and island domestic violence and prevention professionals.

Doors open at 7 p.m. with festival seating and admission is free. For more information on the series and other theater events, visit www.sjctheatre.org.
