The license plate for stewardship passes state legislature

Submitted by the San Juan County Landbank

The special license plate legislation has passed both chambers of the Legislature by overwhelming margins. Senate Bill 5919 and House Bill 1996 dedicate the sale of the specialty license plate, designed by island artist Nancy Spaulding, will raise funds for local stewardship programs. Those include the San Juan Islands Youth Conservation Corps, the only middle school conservation corps in the state, the Coast Salish Youth Stewardship Corps as well as other conservation stewardship projects focused on the natural, agricultural, historic and cultural heritage of the San Juan archipelago.

Many thanks to Rep. Debra Lekanoff, D-Bow, and Sen. Liz Lovelett, D-Anacortes, for their hard work.

Gov. Jay Inslee is expected to sign the bill in April or May, and depending upon the effective date of the legislation, the plate will be available for purchase as early as August, or by October.
