Teen monologue workshops at San Juan Community Theatre

Submitted by San Juan Community Theatre

Island teens get the chance to learn the art of acting alone in six-week workshops beginning March 26.

San Juan Community Theatre’s Youth and Family Program Director Penelope Haskew leads after-school monologue workshops for Teens on Mondays, March 26 to April 30 for high school students and Thursdays, March 29 to May 3 for middle school-aged students.

Students will study a variety of monologues, write their own, and learn how to stage themselves to make the most interesting and appropriate choices for themselves and the character; as well as techniques like how to balance stillness with movement, how to listen to themselves and how to direct their monologue to feel a connection without a partner. The final class will feature an opportunity for students to present two monologues to friends and family.

Classes are held in the Friday Harbor High School drama room. Registration is $65 per student, with scholarships available. Register online at or at the box office. The SJCT box office is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more details on the workshop, contact Haskew at youth@sjctheatre.org.
