Nonprofit provides food for students over the weekend

Submitted by 36 Weekends

Volunteers of the “36 Weekends” program send home nutritious food for kids who would otherwise go hungry over the weekend during the school year.

It is a group of volunteers with a passion for kids who need your help. Research and resources demonstrate that some of the island kids go without food over the weekend. Nearly 40 percent of island kids at the Friday Harbor Elementary School are enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program. The program “36 Weekends” offers a solution to weekend student nutritional needs. Volunteers will launch this program in the fall of 2018. Kids will enroll through the elementary school.

Volunteers have currently partnered with the San Juan Island School District and Kings Market. The SJI Family Resource Center is the fiscal agent, and donations can be made through the Family Resource Center or at www.sji36weekends.org.

The Rotary Club of San Juan Island is the primary sponsor, additional program support comes from United Way and community donors. Rotary has pledged support for this program for the next four years.

Members are also proud to be an all-volunteer group. If you can lend a hand once a week during the school year, email for details. Help by volunteering or donating to help hungry kids on San Juan Island. For more information, visit www.sji36weekends.org.
