Long-time San Juan Island resident debuts children’s book

Submitted by RA Cook

RA Cook, local San Juan islander also known as Rebecca or Becca, has announced the publishing of her debut children’s picture book “Calvin Splinter & His Splendid Splinter Ideas.” Meet Cook at the Orcas Island Library, Saturday, April 27 at 11 a.m. Along with a slideshow, she will read her lively children’s story. Children, parents, grandparents and friends welcome.

“Calvin Splinter & His Splendid Splinter Ideas” is a story of hope and renewal. Written and illustrated by Cook, the book is specifically geared for children ages four to nine. The easily read text and delightful art carry a strong environmental message, dovetailing with such themes as intuitive ideas, relationship building and working together for a common 10-year goal project, the 32-page book comes with a catchy marimba tune entitled “The Humming Song,” lyrics by Cook, music written and arranged by Cook and Margie Smith.

Classically trained and a graduate of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, Cook has a degree in illustration. An award-winning graphic designer and published author, she has worked in the newspaper, magazine and book industry for over three decades.

“I have designed many a book for clients in the past but writing and illustrating my own books is my passion and life’s work,” Cook said.

Semi-retired, she plans to continue self-publishing more of her books.

“There are two other children’s picture books developed and waiting in the wings. Plus a middle-grade book about an Icelandic troll as well as a magical realism novel about time travel on Orcas Island,” Cook said. “So, you might say I’m busy – passionately busy. But I’m not too busy to sign one of my books for you.”
