Wendy Waxman, the Washington State University Extension San Juan County Coordinator for the 4H program, presented an outline of that organization and its outreach to youth on the islands to the Rotary Club of San Juan Island on Wednesday, Nov. 8. The program includes training from the early age of 5 years to handle animals and agriculture, conducting a meeting and instilling the idea of “heart, hands, head and health.”

All meetings are based on parliamentary procedure fostering motions, seconds, discussions and consensus in making decisions. The result of all of this experience, according to fellow 4H Leader and President of San Juan Rotary Adam Eltinge, is that 80 percent of those who participate in the club go on to success in adulthood. The alumni of 4H can be found heading companies, in leadership roles in communities all across the country.
