Lions scholarship gets a boost

Rikki Swin was a second-time winner of the Lions 29th annual Shopping spree.

“We are going to do things a little differently this time,” Swin said.

The raffle drawing took place Nov. 23, and the spree was scheduled to take place Nov. 26 at 1:15 p.m. Rather than complete the spree and have the Lions spend $1-2.000 on groceries, Swin opted to allow the Lions to keep the funds and add it to their local high school scholarships, preferably toward scholarships to a trade school.

According to Lion Jim Carroll, the annual raffle to win the shopping spree raised $3,385. 92. Swin did buy herself a bag of coffee beans for $10.99, and there were three turkey winners. Boo Boo James won one turkey and the Friday Harbor Food Bank won the other two. According to Carroll, the rest of the funds will go into scholarships in some fashion. At press time, The Lions Board had not discussed the details.

“The Lions do such a great job, and such selfless volunteer work, I’d rather just give it back to you,” Swin said.
