Free Reader’s Theatre session features Watergate scandal

Submitted by the San Juan Community Theatre

San Juan Community Theatre’s next On Book! Readers Theatre edition takes us back to 1977 and the aftermath of the Watergate scandal. The free event is at 7 p.m., on Wednesday, May 24 and Thursday, May 25.

The 2006 British play by Peter Morgan, “Frost/Nixon,” is based on a series of televised interviews that the former U.S. President granted broadcaster David Frost in 1977, as a part of Nixon’s efforts to improve his image. Nixon (read by Miguel Herbert), living in San Clemente in Orange County, California, agreed to the interviews when prompted to do so by his literary agent, Irving Lazar. Frost (read by Eric Concord) hires investigators to look into the Watergate scandal and attempts to find the money to pay Nixon for the interviews. Nixon spends much of the time utilizing monologs to try and redeem himself, focusing on topics that he knew, understood, and contributed substantially to, and keeping Frost from asking too many questions.

Directed by Eric Concord, the reading also features Cole Arendt, William Concord, Duvie Dow, Scott Dow, Jennifer Heeb, Shannon Plummer, Bo Turnage and Paul Walsh. Doors open at 7 p.m. with festival seating in the Gubelman Theatre. Admission is free. For more informationevents, visit www.sjctheatre.org.
