Family Umbrella Group seeks donations after sole annual fundraiser canceled

Submitted by the Family Umbrella Group

Due to a limited number of volunteers, the Family Umbrella Group will not be holding its annual spring luncheon and auction this year. This is the Family Umbrella Group’s only fundraiser each year, and the hope is that FUG is able to reach out in other ways this spring to gather donations needed to provide scholarships for island children to attend preschool who otherwise may not be able to.

Since the foundation of the Family Umbrella Group in 1998 by Florence Harrison, scholarships have been provided to countless island families who needed financial assistance for their preschoolers. Harrison knew that preschool plays an important role in academic achievement, school readiness, social/emotional development and social progress.

During this past 2017-18 school year, FUG was able to assist 17 families with scholarships to four different preschools. This is all in thanks to the incredible generosity of individual donors, and wonderful local organizations such at the Rotary and the Community Foundation.

Putting money into preschoolers is an effective way to invest in the future of this country. The absence of the luncheon this year will be felt greatly, and the Family Umbrella Group hopes that the community will come together once again in another way to support the youngest learners. Donation letters will be mailed to previous supporters, or send donations to the Family Umbrella Group, PO Box 392, Friday Harbor, WA 98250, or visit the Mystical Mermaid at 270 Spring St.
