Contra dance at the San Juan Island Grange

Submitted by San Juan Island Grange No. 966

Join the monthly contra dance at the San Juan Island Grange in Friday Harbor from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 21. This is an opportunity to mix and socialize with friends and family and have a good old time.

The caller will be Judy Zeidel, from Bellingham, and the band will be JP and the OK Rhythm Boys from Orcas Island. Donations of $10, or $5 for students, is preferred.

As always with contra, every dance is taught by the caller, and participants don’t need to bring a partner; everyone takes turns partnering with each other, which is one of the friendly features of contra dancing. No experience is needed either since the caller will guide participants every step of the way. Contra is a traditional folk dance, which originated in New England, bringing its style from the British Isles. The music has roots in the Celtic countries, as well as much in common with music from the Southern states. Live music is always a feature of contra dancing.
