They’ve played for audiences around the world. And now, California Guitar Trio brings their whirlwind of instrumental styles to Friday Harbor and the San Juan Community Theatre on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Classical, rock, blues, jazz, world music, progressive and California surf music, the Trio shares unique originals and cleverly arranged interpretations.

None of the Trio is actually a Golden State native. Bert Lams is from Belgium, Hideyo Moriya is from Japan and Paul Richards is from Utah. They met while studying under Robert Fripp and performing with Fripp’s “League of Crafty Guitarists.” The Trio was formed in 1991, and they have been touring ever since, including a worldwide tour with King Crimson, as well as sharing the stage with such legends as Tito Puente, Taj Mahal, Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman.

The group’s performances are an energetic mix of guitar mastery and humor. A reviewer for Guitar Shop Magazine proclaimed the trio: “Pioneers of the New Acoustic Age …World’s Best Acoustic Band.”

California Guitar Trio has released 12 CDs since forming. Their music has been featured on television coverage of the 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004 Olympics and on CBS, NBC, CNN and ESPN programs. Their Web site — cgtrio.com — explains even more about the group that one reviewer noted plays as if one guitarist, but with 18 strings.

California Guitar Trio is sponsored by Computer San Juans and Trumpeter Inn. Tickets are $24 for adults, $12 for student reserved, with $5 student RUSH available at the door.

The SJCT box office is open Tuesdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and one hour before each performance.
