APS-FH welcomes new president

Animal Protection Society Friday Harbor is pleased to announce the appointment of Carolyn Haugen as new APS-FH president. Julie Corey, who served as last year’s president will continue as a board member, focusing on fundraising and the new shelter project. Dr. Haugen brings more than 50 years of relevant nonprofit experience to her new role. The APS-FH 2017 executive officers will include Vice President Jaime Ellsworth,

The APS-FH 2017 executive officers include Vice President Jaime Ellsworth, Co-secretaries Nancy Vejvoda and Susan Mazzarella and Treasurer Vince Dauciunas. The APS Board of Directors are Gina Sandwith, Claudia Salquist, Jan Gray, Jon Zerby, Toni Bailey, Rebecca Hughes, Howard Crowell and Charlie Bodenstab.

“We welcome Carolyn’s experience and leadership to our shelter family,” said Director Leslie Byron. “In her new role, she will help govern with our updated bylaws continuing to serve our community and finally break ground to build our modern state-of-the-art new shelter designed specifically to serve our growing island community”.

The Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor, founded in 1982, is a private nonprofit animal welfare organization based in San Juan County, operating a single facility proudly serving the people and animals of San Juan Island with a variety of programs through community outreach, advocacy and services to ensure animal protection and companionship is accessible. APS-FH is a private facility and receives no local, state or federal support with the exception of a small portion of county dog license fees.

The goal of APS-FH is to build a community of compassion through adoption of homeless pets, humane education, abuse investigation and community outreach and leadership. The mission at APS-FH is to reduce pet overpopulation, to adopt unwanted homeless pets to quality homes, to protect animals from neglect, abuse and abandonment, to advocate for the welfare of animals through education and assistance and to promote greater appreciation of human and animal interactions.
