Journal was right to endorse candidates | Letters

In my opinion, a community paper should be, as you wrote, “a trusted source” with endorsements which hopefully urge citizens to vote and participate in a democracy.

I want to compliment you on the editorial you wrote endorsing Monica Harrington, Barbara Sharp and Bill Williams for the San Juan County Public Hospital District Board. I meant to write last month when you received some criticism as to why a community newspaper should do something like this.

Better late than never. In my opinion, a community paper should be, as  you wrote, “a trusted source” with endorsements which hopefully urge citizens to vote and participate in a democracy. And endorsing candidates in local elections is a logical role for a community newspaper which The Journal has done in the past.

Your last paragraph was “right on.” I also appreciated The Journal offering space for all candidates to express their views on issues a month before the election. Keep up the good work.
