A thank you to the community | Letters

A sincere thank you is due to the participating artisans who made their diligence and professional craft available to the public.

The Island Artisans Board would like to extend a warm thank you to the Friday Harbor community, for all those that took the time to come to our annual Holiday Market at the elementary school.

In addition, a sincere thank you is due to the participating artisans who made their diligence and professional craft available to the public.

For 37 years, artists and community members who have exhibited and purchased art from this event have done more than they may truly realize.

Every spring, when our high school seniors graduate, the Island Artisans group provides scholarships to students who present an art portfolio and essay that demonstrates a commitment to excellence for college level study. The 2015 graduating class received a total of seven awards ranging from $500 to $3,000. The total scholarship value was $12,000. You all made this possible.

Each participating artisan in the Holiday Market pays a generous $50 booth fee and donates 10 percent of their total sales to the fund.

This money forms the bulk of the proceeds. Additional funds come from the raffle proceeds of the ever- popular Lawson gravel and tempting gift baskets donated by loyal local businesses.

Each volunteer board member generously donates their time, assuring the continuance of this event year after year.

Their dedication is motivated by the belief that art plays a meaningful and enhancing role in our lives, and should be recognized and celebrated with each new generation.

Such displays of passion and commitment remind us that the “Earth without art is just ‘Eh.’”
