Bryn Barnard’s illustrations for the book, “The Land of Smaerd,” are on exhibit in the Island Museum of Art.

A reception and book signing are tonight at 5 p.m. in the museum. The event is sponsored by Ravenhill Construction and Osito’s.

The children’s book was written by Andrea von Botefuhr from a story by Angela Russell, and published by KnowWonder Publishing. "Smaerd" is "dreams" spelled backward. The colorful, richly detailed, surreal images explore a realm of imagination, hope and altered reality.

The show continues through Sept. 17.

Island Museum of Art is located at 314 Spring St., Friday Harbor. Call 370-5050; visit www.westcottbay.org.
