Marian VanHyning
Jan 7, 1921 - Jun 12, 2010

Marian VanHyning of Friday Harbor died June 12, 2010, at Island Hospital after a short illness.

She was 89.

She had been a resident of Islands Convalescent Center for the past several years.

Born in Cottage Grove, Ore., Jan. 7, 1921, Marian is the daughter of Elmer and Nellie Mae Moore. She graduated from Cottage Grove High School in 1938.

She studied Dietary Management and Home Economics at Oregon State University in Corvallis.

She specialized in crystalware at leading department stores in Dallas before retiring.

She and Lavern Curtiss VanHyning, who preceded her in death in 1980, had three sons: Curt VanHyning of Friday Harbor, Richard, of Portland, Ore., and Peter, who died in 2002. Also surviving are daughter-in-law Robin Van Hyning and granddaughter Rachel Patterson of Friday Harbor.

Marian also has two living sisters, Sara Jane Kugel, in Mexico, and Pauline O’Neil, of Seattle.

Her eldest sister, Kathleen Johnson, died last year.

Marian moved to San Juan Island in 1997 to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law, and was a very active participant in Convalescent Center activities in recent years.

Services will be held at Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church, June 25, at noon.
