Islanders and visitors are invited to take a hike and celebrate the opening of a long-sought trail link connecting English Camp with Roche Harbor Village on June 19.

The San Juan Island Trails Committee, a part of Island Rec, will host a public ceremony and official ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. on the parade ground at English Camp.

Everyone is then invited to hike the three-mile-long trail, or any part of it. Bus transportation will be provided along the route for those wanting to walk only part of the trail, or only one-way.

The trail will be marked with small red surveyors' flags.

The event, called Barracks to Boats, "will honor all those islanders who have worked so hard to make this happen," said Cinda Pierce, Trails Committee chairwoman.

“Peter Dederich, superintendent of the National Historical Park; Brent Snow, general manager of Roche Harbor Resort; Will Hamilton, land manager of Roche Harbor Highlands; Island Rec, which has supported the Trails Committee since its inception in 1999; plus all the countless islanders who have given so much time to bring this first long-distance island trail to fruition — all deserve our genuine thanks.”

Refreshments will be served, and there is no charge for the event.
