Coast Salish master storyteller Johnny Moses in Friday Harbor Oct. 12

Johnny Moses, a Coast Salish master storyteller and memory keeper, will speak Oct. 12, 1-4 p.m., in the San Juan Island Grange.

Admission is $20, but no one will be turned away. Children younger than 12 get in free.

The event is billed as a potluck celebration.

Moses, Tulalip, was raised in the Nuu-chah-nulth village of Ohiat on the west coast of Vancouver Island, B.C. He was raised in the traditional ways by his grandparents and sent by his elders to share their teachings with all people.

Moses is a master storyteller, oral historian, traditional healer and respected spiritual leader. His traditional name is Whis.stem.men.knee (Walking Medicine Robe). He carries the Si.Si.Wiss (sacred breath, sacred life) medicine teachings and healing ceremonies of his Northwest Coast people.

Moses is fluent in eight Native languages and is a traveling ambassador for Northwest Coast cultures. He shares the knowledge and richness of his spiritual and cultural traditions with people across the United States and Canada through storytelling, lectures and workshops.

Moses also supports and is supported by his beloved elder, Vi Hilbert (Taqseblu), who is dedicated to preserving the Lushootseed language and culture.
