Exposed: risks of distracted, drunk driving at hand

The dangers of texting while driving and driving under the influence will be under the microscope and on the screen when UNITE International’s “Arrive Alive Tour” unfolds in Friday Harbor.

The daylong event on Friday, May 16, starts at 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Friday Harbor high school and middle school offers students first-hand experience at the potential consequences of drunk and distracted driving in a controlled environment. Through the use of a high-tech simulator, impact video and other resources, participants experience the condition of being distracted or intoxicated while behind the wheel.

UNITE International, a private driver-safety company that holds seminars for companies, colleges and high schools across the country, designs programs to raise awareness about distracted and drunk driving and offers follow-up programs that reinforce topics and lessons learned at its educational events.

The Friday Harbor “Arrive Alive Tour” seminar is sponsored by San Juan Island Prevention Coalition. For info, 378-9683, or visit, www.sjipc.org.
