A six-year-old Stillpoint School kindergartner is a grand-prize winner of the “Make Your Own Holiday” contest, a national art and writing competition sponsored by the Scholastic Reading Club.

And what holiday would John S. like to see? None other than “Dinosaur Day,” which, in recognition of the award, Stillpoint is busy bringing to life. Dinosaur Day will feature dinosaur celebrations, dinosaur decorations, and dinosaur activities, and one very tall cake, which Scholastic Reading Club is working with local baker Felicity Milne to create.

Dinosaur day is scheduled for May 21 at Stillpoint, and may also include a hands-on, artifacts-filled visit from Seattle’s renowned Burke Museum.

The Scholastic contest challenges students to create an original holiday, with detailed descriptions of customs, costumes, traditions, decorations and food. Contestants compete in two age categories, pre-kindergarten to first grade, and grades 2-6. Winners are selected based on originality, clarity of thought and execution.

— Editor’s note: John’s last name has been withheld per Scholastic Reading Club policy.
