The manager of San Juan Islands National Monument will be in Friday Harbor for a “meet-and-greet” with islanders, March 12.

A veteran administrator with the Bureau of Land Management, Marcia deChadenedes was recently named manager of the newly created national monument following an earlier four-month appointment as interim manager. She joins the BLM Spokane office March 9.

The meet-and-greet, hosted by Islanders for the San Juan Islands National Monument, is 3-6 p.m. at the San Juan Preservation Trust office, 468 Argyle Ave. Daniel Picard, district manager of the BLM Spokane region, will also attend.

The monument comprises 980 acres of BLM land in the archipelago in San Juan, Whatcom and Skagit counties, including Patos, Indian, Posey and Blind islands, Kellet Bluff, Cattle Point Lighthouse, Turn Point, and Iceberg/Chadwick/Point and Colville/Watmough Bay preserves.

An 11-year veteran within the BLM management ranks, deChadenedes’ has served in various capacities in California, Colorado, New Mexico, and is a folklorist, interpretive planner, museums specialist, earning a master’s degree at the University of Oregon.

“To have the opportunity to be part of this community’s unsurpassed momentum to accomplish conservation collaboratively, is an honor – the stuff my dreams are made of,” deChadenedes said in a press release.

deChadenedes will join Nick Teague, longtime BLM recreation specialist, and will work out of BLM’s office, (360) 468-3754, on Lopez Island.
