— Michael Vouri’s “The Life & Times of General George E. Pickett,” 8 p.m., San Juan Community Theatre. Part of SummerFest 2008. Tickets: $12 adults, $6 students reserved, $5 student RUSH on available seats one hour before the performance. Call 378-3210.

Wednesday, July 9

— Summer Reading Program with Thomas Arthur: Lyrical Juggler, 1:30 p.m., Friday Harbor Elementary School field. Since when is juggling a form of dance? If you have to ask you’ve never seen Thomas Arthur’s choreography for balls, spheres and hoops. Arthur commands his objects to hover and whiz, spin and caper with the rhythmic finesse of a conductor. Sponsored by the San Juan Island Library. 378-2798.

— Music on the Lawn: The Fun Band with Don Peake, 6:30-8:30 p.m., San Juan Historical Museum. Lopez Island’s favorite party band. — Book Talk: Author Jennie Shortridge, 7 p.m., San Juan Island Library. Jennie Shortridge will read from her fourth novel, “Love and Biology at the Center of the Universe.” Griffin Bay Bookstore will be on hand with copies available for signing. Shortridge is the author of “Eating Heaven” and “Riding with the Queen.”

— Second annual Strawberry Festival, noon to 3 p.m., St. David’s Episcopal Church. Strawberry shortcakes, musicians, games and fun.

— Summer Reading Program with Wolf Hollow, 1:30 p.m., Friday Harbor Elementary School field. Learn all about birds of prey and become more aware of the birds living around us. Learn how your activities can cause problems for these animals, and consider what you can do to help. Sponsored by the San Juan Island Library. 378-2798.

Thursday, July 17

— Literary Salon, 7 p.m., San Juan Island Library. Free. Drop in to visit with a group of folks who love books, but don’t want to join a book club. Meet in front of the fireplace on each third Thursday of the month to discuss books we have been reading. It’s a great way to get ideas for what to read next, or to rave about a favorite.
