Gov. Christine Gregoire issued a proclamation Oct. 7 banning all outdoor burning in Washington state.

The ban is in effect in all 39 Washington counties, including San Juan.

The ban prohibits outdoor burning of any kind, including campfires, bonfires, residential yard-debris cleanup, as well as land clearing, weed abatement, agricultural burn activity and fireworks. It will remain in effect through Oct. 15, and possibly longer, according to local fire officials.

The ban does not prohibited the use of liquid fuels or gas-fueled stoves, provided the use is over a non-flammable surface and is located at least five feet from flammable vegetation. The use of charcoal grills at home is permitted, but the grill must be used over a non-flammable surface and five feet from flammable vegetation.
