Award winning Lopez Island artist featured at Depot Arts Center

Original Plein Air Pastels of Steve Hill, from Lopez Island, will be featured in a special showing at Depot Arts Center, 611 R Avenue, Anacortes, from April 1 through May 28. An artist reception is slated for Friday, April 1, 6 to 9 p.m. Regular viewing hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday.
Hill is an avid traveler and paints wherever he goes, on site and in natural light. Works from Croatia, France, Italy, New York, the Skagit Valley and San Juan Islands will be on display during this exhibit.
Hill’s art work has won major recognition in international juried exhibits over the past few years, including the 24th Annual Chelsea International Juried Fine Arts Competition in New York City, one of 30 artists selected from a field of several thousand international entries, by Ira Goldberg, Executive Director of The Art Students League of New York. Hill also won a $1500 “Best of Show” award in The Northwest Pastel Society 25th Annual International Juried Fine Arts Competition in 2010. He regularly competes in national juried plein air painting events and is once again participating in the upcoming 18th Annual Carmel Arts Festival in Carmel, CA.
Hill’s work has also won 2 consecutive “Best of Show” awards in the Plein Air Painters of Washington/San Juan Preservation Trust annual invitational plein air “paint-outs” in the San Juan islands.
His work has been recently published in four books: “Best of America Pastel Artists” Vol. I & II, (’07&’09), as well as “Best of Worldwide Artists working in Pastel, Charcoal and Drawing ” Vol. I (Kennedy Publications) and Washington en Plein Air, by the Plein Air Painters of Washington, in 2010. Signed copies of his books will be available at this exhibit.
Hill is a signature member of The Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters, member of the American Society of Marine Artists, past president and signature member of The Northwest Pastel Society, active member of the Plein Air Painters of Washington and The Lopez Artists Guild. He teaches art workshops in the U.S. and Europe, where he will be traveling to Venice and Tuscany in May, 2012 to teach a ten day workshop. Hill will also be juror and workshop instructor at the 43rd Annual Ocean Shores National Juried Fine Art Competition, April 2012, at Ocean Shores, WA.
