The ‘Shack’ is back, Oldwyn at the helm

“Our Monday night dinner special will be ribs and Rainier — select from a spicy, cayenne rub for those that like heat and a more traditional rub — both having a nice smoke flavor,” Oldwyn said, adding that ribs and Rainier are a “perfect” combination and compliment for Monday Night football.

The Friday Harbor BBQ Shack is back in business and with a new “Pit Boss”, Kaal Oldwyn, at the helm.

A San Juan Island native, Oldwyn has long desired to prepare good, free, down-home barbecue. The Shack re-opened Nov. 29.

“Our menu will see some changes – the staples of BBQ will still be ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and of course hush puppies,” Oldwyn said. “People should watch for our fried chicken, jalapeno poppers, new sauces, and the rub selection on our ribs.”

Winter hours at the BBQ Shack are Thursday – Monday, open for both lunch and dinner, in downtown Friday Harbor, 40 Spring Street.

BBQ Shack owners Travis and Sybil Mager are delighted by the new team and new direction.

“We are excited to see the passion and enthusiasm that Kaal and his wife Courtney have with the re-launch of the restaurant,” Travis Mager said. “We know that Kaal delivers a quality, heart-felt product that we are looking forward to sharing with others.”
