Gates to open at San Juan dump Mondays

The additional day of operation is among several changes instituted by Lautenbach Recycling since the Mount Vernon-based disposal company took over management of the transfer station in June.

The solid waste transfer station on Sutton Road will be open for business Mondays, 9 a.m. to noon, beginning June 30.

The additional day of operation is among several changes instituted by Lautenbach Recycling since the Mount Vernon-based disposal company took over management of the transfer station in June, under contract with San Juan County. Lawn waste and wood recycling can be discarded on site, in a new bin, and employees will make added effort to assist customers, senior citizens in particular, for whom unloading of trash and recyclables may prove difficult, company President Troy Lautenbach said.

“We think opening on Monday will alleviate the 12 to 15-car backups we’ve been experiencing on Sunday afternoons, which is by far our busiest time,” Lautenbach said. “We’re responding to requests from patrons, especially local B&B owners and other businesses, that we open on Mondays.”

In addition to three hours of operation on Mondays, regular summer hours at the Sutton Road transfer station are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
