Association of Professional Landscape Designers-Washington Chapter 10th anniversary gala March 20

The Association of Professional Landscape Designers-Washington Chapter, or APLDWA, is hosting a gala to celebrate the state chapter's 10th anniversary.

The celebration will take place March 20, 6-11 p.m., at the Hotel Deca in Seattle’s University District. The catered fare will include hors d’oeuvres and libations in the hotel’s lobby, followed by a sit-down dinner in the Grand Ballroom.

The evening’s featured speaker is Topher Delaney, award-winning landscape designer and artist and principal of the San Francisco-based SEAM Studio. Delaney’s projects range from the sculpture garden at the Portland Art Museum to the more recent botanical/medicinal garden at the University of California School of Medicine.

Delaney’s presentation, “Attention + Intention,” will focus on the questions of how and why we garden. Delaney was a featured speaker at the National APLD conference in Seattle in 2002, and it marked her last speaking engagement in this region.

Delaney’s 30-year career as an artist has encompassed a wide breadth of projects which focus on the exploration of our cultural interpretations of landscape architecture, site installation and public art. Her practice, SEAM Studio, has evolved from a traditional landscape architectural structure to an atelier which serves as a venue for the investigation of cultural, social and artistic narratives “seamed” together to form dynamic physical installations.

During the evening, the chapter will run ongoing presentation slideshows of member projects, and will display historical information highlighting chapter programs and workshops over the last 10 years. Some time will also be taken for special recognition and awards for long-time chapter members.

The event is open to anyone interested or involved in landscape design, art, architecture, landscape architecture, horticulture, design, or medicinal gardens. Before March 1, tickets are $75 per person for APLD members and $75 for one APLD member guest, and $85 for non-members. After March 1, tickets will be $95.

In 1999, APLDWA was the first state chapter to emerge from the national APLD organization. APLD advances landscape design as an independent profession and promotes the recognition of landscape designers as highly qualified, dedicated professionals. APLD supports landscape designers through national certification, professional growth and networking, business and legislative advocacy, and international design exposure.
