Changes in store at Consignment Treasures
San Juan Island's Consignment Treasures is reinventing itself.
In a recent press release, founder Frank Penwell said Consignment Treasures is seeking “charitable” status as a 501 C-3 and that the processing of recycled materials and pick-up service should increase with the change in standing.
Penwell said CT is creating a board of directors and a Citizens Recycling Advisory Committee to help realign its mission, establish a community recycling program and form a "membership-based" recycling center.
Located in the 6000 block of Roche Harbor Road, Consignment Treasures has functioned for seven years as a not-for-profit recycling enterprise.
It operates under three county-issued conditional-use permits and recycled roughly 73 tons of material in 2010. CT hopes to coordinate recycling activities with the The Exchange on Orcas Island and the Take It or Leave It on Lopez Island in the near future, Penwell said.
As a charitable group, CT will be seeking financial donations and professional services to pursue grants, promote education and purchase additional equipment.
CT will provide information about its new direction and goals, and hopes to recruit board and committee members at a meeting, Thursday, March 8, at the Grange Hall in Friday Harbor.
